In 1998 Antoinette began removing herself from the confines of stretched canvas and working on ragg . Paper provides the ability to play with absorption rates, has a malleable quality, and retains the immediacy of drawing - which has always been the touchstone for her painting.

Her process combines various materials and deploys chance, control and analysis. Each work starts with gestures and washes, then moves into controlled brush strokes with detail. When the painting reaches a comfortable finished point it is then time to indulge in the materials. The goal is to balance raw, untouched paper in some areas with highly saturated color in others, sometimes consciously, others by chance. A close introspection reveals a diary of inscribed messages and ghost like imagery , disclosing the many layers within.

In her series "Hmmmm" shown here, the main goal of the symbols and text is to address subjective translation and perception. Communication is becoming increasingly abbreviated by technology and shortened attention-spans, breeding a new semi-verbal lexicon. As this new language changes, it once again alters the way we communicate, creating a feedback loop. The paradox is that this abbreviated commentary leads to more frequent "real-time" communication, but less discourse.

Antoinette has a BFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited in galleries across the US. In 2007 she was nominated for Best Emerging Artist by GLAAD in NYC. She is a member of the Washington Project for the Arts and founding member of ARTDC.org. She currently resides in New York.
